Tasteful Thickness

I fell into this bike through a series of strange events. My original Jake The Snake destroyed its derailleur hanger (and a nice Chorus 10S derailleur) on a muddy ride through the woods, necessitating a trip to my dealer, Ozone Bikes (Sadly, since closed, like so many other good bike shops). While there, I saw this bike on display and took a nice long look when the shop owner told me he would “Make you an AMAZING deal on that bike.” That deal turned out to be over $1000.00 off retail, as it had been a demo all through SXSW and had seen a few hundred miles. Since I’m traditionally a relatively frugal German, I liked that idea and bought it a week later.

It’s been a long road since then, and I’ve had many memories with this bike. As of this writing (Jan 2nd, 2024), I’ve converted her to my knock-around bike, with flat bars and a Shimano 12spd LX drivetrain. This setup initially had some teething problems, as getting the chain line right was almost impossible. It’s all good now, and I have a policy where if I’m running an errand within 5 miles of home, I take this bike rather than a car.

Thickness has been my everything bike for a while. I have used her for everything from commuting and adventure riding to roaming around, but since I’ve gotten the new Super Jake, there is no more racing in her future.
